Ecuador Shines: 5 Hotels Join the MICHELIN Guide 2025

The prestigious MICHELIN Guide — known worldwide for highlighting the best in gastronomy and accommodation — has just announced its selection of recommended hotels in Ecuador for 2025. This marks an important moment for the country, which continues to position itself as a destination of luxury, nature and unique experiences in Latin America.

For the first time, several Ecuadorian properties have been included in this coveted list, placing Ecuador firmly on the radar of international travellers seeking excellence, authenticity and high-level service.

Below, we explain what this recognition means, which hotels have been selected and why Ecuador is increasingly becoming a premium destination. We also look at the role of emerging destinations such as Mindo and the contribution of boutique projects like Las Terrazas de Dana Boutique Lodge & Spa.

What Does It Mean to Be in the MICHELIN Guide?

The MICHELIN Guide is not only a benchmark for culinary quality. Its hotel selection recognises:

Thoughtful design and strong personality

Connection with the surroundings and local culture

High-level services

Authentic, memorable experiences

Excellent comfort

Commitment to sustainability and the destination

Being part of this guide places a hotel on the international map for travellers who look for unforgettable stays backed by a globally trusted seal of quality.

Ecuadorian Hotels in the MICHELIN Guide 2025

This year’s selection includes hotels from different regions of the country, showcasing the richness and diversity of Ecuador: cloud forest, Andes, Galápagos and historic cities.

Mashpi Lodge – Chocó Andino

A global reference in sustainable tourism and nature-based luxury. Located in the Chocó Andino region, it offers an immersive experience in one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet. Its 2 MICHELIN Keys place it among the top lodges in Latin America.

Pikaia Lodge – Galápagos Islands

Designed for travellers who want to experience the Galápagos with exclusivity and comfort, this lodge combines contemporary architecture, conservation and impeccable service. Its inclusion shows the strength of Ecuador in unique, world-class destinations.

Casa Gangotena – Quito

An iconic boutique hotel in Quito’s Historic Centre, housed in a heritage mansion with classic elegance and outstanding hospitality. Its MICHELIN recognition confirms its status as one of the best urban hotels in the country.

Hotel del Parque – Guayaquil

A colonial-style hotel set in a very special natural and cultural environment. It blends history, serene luxury and refined service, ideal for those seeking rest within the city.

Hotel Otavalo – Otavalo

Located in one of Ecuador’s most important cultural areas, its presence in the guide highlights authenticity, local crafts and experiences that connect guests with the indigenous identity of the northern Andes.

Why Is This Recognition So Important for Ecuador?

The inclusion of Ecuadorian hotels in the MICHELIN Guide boosts several key aspects of the country’s tourism industry:

International Prestige

Ecuador positions itself as an emerging luxury destination, comparable to countries that are already leaders in high-end tourism.

Growth in High-Value Visitors

It attracts travellers who look for exclusive, personalised and sustainable experiences — a segment with high economic value.

Global Benchmark for Standards

The MICHELIN Guide uses rigorous criteria, motivating the hotel sector to raise standards and aim for service excellence.

Media Visibility

Each MICHELIN announcement generates impact in the press, blogs, social media and travel platforms, attracting new audiences to the country.

Mindo and Nature Tourism: A Destination Growing Alongside MICHELIN

Although the 2025 selection did not include hotels in Mindo, the Chocó Andino has become one of the most sought-after destinations for travellers who love nature, birdwatching, local gastronomy and sustainable experiences.

The region has been declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, confirming its ecological value and tourism appeal. In this context, Mindo stands out for:

Cloud forests with exceptional biodiversity

Nature trails and waterfalls

Local cuisine that is evolving and improving

Boutique hotels with personalised experiences

Activities for couples, families and adventure travellers

This makes Mindo a nature destination that perfectly complements the high-end tourism promoted by the MICHELIN Guide.

Las Terrazas de Dana Boutique Lodge & Spa: A Boutique Experience Aligned with the MICHELIN Philosophy

Although Las Terrazas de Dana Boutique Lodge & Spa is not part of the MICHELIN Guide 2025, we share many of the values that this prestigious selection recognises.

What Brings Us Closer to MICHELIN Standards

Personalised Experiences

We offer a warm, professional and detail-oriented service, with a boutique approach that prioritises each guest’s comfort and privacy.

Private Cabins with Cloud Forest Views

Our cabins are designed for guests seeking disconnection, tranquillity and authentic contact with the nature of the Chocó Andino.

Responsible Tourism

We work with sustainable practices, respect for the environment and support for local communities in Mindo.

Signature Gastronomy

Our new Brito Restaurante, led by chef Joaquín Espejo, offers a refined culinary proposal that elevates the gourmet experience in Mindo.

Privileged Location

We are just about two hours from Quito, yet fully immersed in one of the world’s most important ecosystems.

Why Mention Las Terrazas de Dana in This Context?

Because many travellers who look for hotels in the MICHELIN Guide are also interested in:

Boutique getaways

Immersive nature experiences

Personalised service

High-level gastronomy

Romantic and peaceful stays

Exclusive destinations close to Quito

Las Terrazas de Dana Boutique Lodge & Spa offers exactly that: an accessible boutique luxury alternative, genuine and surrounded by nature.

Conclusion: Ecuador Joins the World’s Hospitality Elite

The arrival of Ecuadorian hotels in the MICHELIN Guide 2025 marks a milestone for the country’s tourism industry. From cloud forest lodges to urban hotels and unique island properties in Galápagos, Ecuador proves that it can compete with the best destinations in the world.

At the same time, regions such as Mindo continue to develop as high-quality boutique alternatives, where projects like Las Terrazas de Dana Boutique Lodge & Spa embody a strong commitment to hospitality, comfort and a deep connection with nature.

Ecuador shines — and this is just the beginning.

Ecuador records a new species of hummingbirds: Blue-throated Hillstar (Oreotrochilus cyanolaemus). It was discovered on the border between the provinces of El Oro and Loja.

The finding was published on September 26 in the scientific journal AUK, official media of the American Ornithological Society.

According to the research team, this new species is endemic to El Oro and Loja. It is closely related to a hummingbird called ‘Estrella de Cabeza Verde’, which lives in northern Peru and southern Ecuador. A new endemic species that adds to the 132 that already exist in Ecuador.

The deep blue of its throat distinguishes it from the other six species of stars described to date. This new species also has a green head. It is distinguished from other six by the particularity of its deep blue neck. It has other differences, such as the black line under the bib, the upper velvet triangle and its tail with white tips.

The individual is small and robust, his feathers are easily confused with the green of the branches; nevertheless, its white front stands out in the grayish of the páramo.

The last bird species discovered in Ecuador was described in 2.000, according to the statement. This finding opens the possibilities of finding new species of frogs, toads, snakes and mice.

With the joy of finding a new species, there is a concern to preserve it. At that time, the Blue-Throated Hillstar Hummingbird was classified in the category ‘Critically Endangered’. Its habitat is a very small area where there is evidence of great degradation due to the burning of the páramo, agriculture, livestock and mining concessions.

Ecuador wins a new endemic species that will also improve the flow of ecotourism in the country as tourists. It will help a lot because many ornithologists from all over the world will come to see it.

Booking your first tour ever can be an overwhelming thought.

With so many spectacular places around the world, choosing one is anything but easy. You’re divided between where you really, really want to go and where you must go. Asking for suggestions from your friends and family can make things more complicated. Everyone has their own list of places! Some people recommend you one country while some will tell you to go to another. You don’t know whom to listen to and whom not to.

And of course, we too have our own list of recommendations! Don’t worry; we won’t confuse you like all the rest by giving you 10 different locations to travel to. At the top of our list sits Mindo!

Never heard of it? Let us tell you some important details about it first.

Introducing the Start of this Post, Mindo, Ecuador

Mindo is a small, beautiful village located super close to Ecuador’s capital – Quito. It is located at the bottom of the lush Mindo valley, making it an instant favorite among both locals and foreigners who love everything green. It is set in the Andean foothills of Ecuador amidst a stunning cloud-forest.

Its unique forest is what grabs the attention of all bird watchers around the globe, compelling them to visit this place right away. However, this forest is the hub of many other interesting activities (more on that later) that piques the interest of other tourists as well.

Why Mindo, Ecuador?

If you’re both a nature lover as well as an adventure seeker, Mindo, Ecuador is the best holiday destination for you. Locals and foreigners alike find this forest not only as a great chilling spot but also find it to be the center of a plethora of cultural activities which. That makes their trip all the way more fun and adventurous all the while. You can get a taste of almost everything when making a visit here. From seeing wonderful landscapes to spotting hundreds of diverse species like birds, mammals, and reptiles to engaging in challenging activities, this place offers everything a tour should.

This village is situated in isolated slightly off-the-beaten tracks. If you’re looking for an escape from all the hubbub of the city place, you will love the peace and quiet that Mindo, Ecuador offers. You will find this village buzzing with the delightful sound of birds humming in the trees, rather than the place filled with pollution and traffic.

Did you know that this town is also well-known for the production of chocolate in Ecuador “Mindo Chocolate?”

Aren’t you still convinced why you should visit this forest? Scroll down to know some more fascinating reasons why Mindo is the best destination for you.

Is Mindo Really Worth Your Visit?

We’ll say – absolutely yes!

You know why?

First off, it offers its visitors excellent bird watching Mindo tours!

Famous for sheltering more than 500 species, people from far and wide visit this area for Mindo bird tours. Mindo has won the Audubon Society’s Annual Christmas Bird Count six times (!!!), spotting the most species in a span of just 24 hours at the year’s end. Plus, the small forest holds about 16% of the world’s bird species. This is precisely why all bird-nerds across the world must plan to go on Mindo bird tours.

Bird watching Mindo tours will prove to be an extremely enlightening activity where you can encounter birds that you never knew existed before!

Yes, that’s right – you can find Cock-of-the-rock, Chestnut-Mandibled Toucan, Toucan Barbet, Giant Antpitta, Scaled Fruiteater, to name a few.

However, remember birding in Ecuador is something for the early-risers. So, if you are all about bird watching Ecuador, get up early in the morning, around 5 am to 10 am and go on for Mindo birding tours.

You will find unique birds perched up on the branches of dense trees of this tropical forest. The most famous bird you are likely to find there is the cock-of-the-rock. People all over the world opt for bird watching Mindo tours just to have a glance at this rare phenomenal bird. Every day, whether it is heavily raining or it’s a bright sunny day, cocks-of-the-rock, covered in bright blood-red orange feathers gather in the forest, generally, around 6 am. The sound of their loud squawks and the sight of them dancing on the branches, wrangling with each other, hoping to flatter their female counterparts, are some of the things that make the birding in Ecuador absolutely thrilling.

Where to Go for Birding in Ecuador?

From dozens of species of hummingbirds to the famous cock-of-the-rock, all of these birds (and several more) reside in this incredibly quaint small town – Mindo – in the rainforest that’s only 2 hours away from northeast of Quito.

Although Mindo also offers a remarkable line of activities, it’s mostly known for Mindo bird tours. Unfortunately, at times, it is harder to find some birds. For instance, there are birds you can only see at dawn, requiring you to wake up early and hike up to the forest to see the diverse beauty of nature. Then there are some birds that are quite easy to spot. You can easily see them resting in their habitat or pecking the worms.

One of the places where you can experience bird watching Mindo tours is the “Yellow House”. You can reach there in roughly ten minutes on foot. You might also find some great bird sightings along the way. Once you reach there, you can access the property’s walking trails for a $6 fee. A long hike to the place can give you the opportunity to see species like toucans, quetzals, parrots, barbets and many more birds. If you’re lucky enough, you might also spot spectacled bears and monkeys there.

Some other places where you can have Mindo bird tours are Ruta San Lorenzo and San Tadeo banana feeder. There is also a famous butterfly farm in Mindo that you must visit with your friends and family. Wouldn’t it be great learning about the different stages of a butterfly’s life? Or how about surrounding yourself by more than 1200 fluttering butterflies?

The bonus of your visit to Mindo is that you are just not restricted to bird watching. If you’re not into bird watching that much, there are still quite a few fun activities to do here like trekking at the Tarabita (CableCar( and Sanctuary of Waterfalls, tubing, canyoning, swimming at the river, coffee tour, teleférico, chocolate tour, butterfly farm, visit to the orquid garden, night walk and zip-lining.

Honestly, one day is simply not enough to see everything around if you’re planning a tour to Mindo. There are several full day tours that leave from Quito (Ecuador’s capital!) which you are of course, free to check out but you need to dedicate more days to your tour to truly enjoy the perks of this awesome place. We don’t want you to miss out on some of the best experiences while visiting this gorgeous place. Worried about your accommodation while exploring Mindo? Las Terrazas de Dana has the answer to all your accommodation related woes!
For a weekend getaway full of relaxation and serenity, visit Papallacta. This small town located in the heart of the Andes Mountains has many activities to soothe the soul and satisfy nature lovers, and is easily accessible from Quito. From the city’s Terminal Terrestre Cumandá, buses depart roughly every 20 minutes and can bring you to Papallacta within about 2 hours.

Due to its high elevation of 3,300 meters above sea level, and its humid mountain landscape, this town can get quite cold and rainy. This is one of the main reasons why so many people flock to the hot springs. The hot springs represent the main attraction of the town, and are definitely not to be missed. Though the temperatures can be chilly, the scenery and location is simply stunning, so sitting in the hot springs is the perfect way to admire the views while basking in warmth.

Hotel Termas Papallacta is the most popular and well-known place to visit hot springs in the town, though there are also public hot springs for cheaper prices and more tourists. Staying at the hotel is more expensive than staying at a few of the nearby hostels, but the luxurious experience is worth it. When paying to stay at the nice hotel, the hot springs are included in the cost. But for those who prefer chapter accommodation, you can pay for daily admission to the hot springs for only $7.

The hot water in the springs occurs naturally, and at Hotel Termas there are numerous different pools with different temperature levels. The volcanoes that provide heat to the water are named Cayambe and Antisana, and the natural waters include minerals like calcium, chloride, and sulfates. These natural minerals provide health benefits and can be good for the skin, so a day at the hot springs will leave you feeling refreshed and glowing.

Because Cayambe and Antisana volcanoes are within close proximity, Papallacta also offers some quality hiking spots. Close by the Hotel Termas Papallacta, you can hike through páramo and the surrounding cloud forest areas to immerse yourself in wilderness and view mountains, waterfalls, and rivers. The trail costs a small fee, and there is an information center where you can decide which trail you want to hike as there are many different paths. A full hike in the provided, marked trails can take up to 3 hours.

Papallacta is very small, and not a very popular tourist destination so there are not many other worthwhile things to do. This location is perfect for a short trip away from the city to enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the volcanic hot springs. Hiking offers a more adventurous option, but the soothing hot springs are really the main reason why travelers would visit Papallacta. But because it is relatively close to Quito and does have beautiful scenery, this town can be a great way to relax and spend some quality time with nature.

This location is a good spot to add when you visit Ecuador and Mindo!.

VERY RECOMMENDED ! The hotel trusted driver picked us up at the airport with a sign and we walked together to his truck where he welcomes us to Ecuador with a hot herbal tea :) It took us 2.5 hours with a great view and company to get into Mindo, there we met David, the lovely owner of the Lodge. There was a mistake at Hotels.com and David decided to prepare us dinner on the house, although it wasn’t his mistake at all. Moreover, we are a vegan couple so they cooked us a special meal :) The room was very clean, so are the towels and sheets. A great view from the balcony AND from the jacuzzi that has a window to the outside. You can ask to eat breakfast at the room and chew with a smile while watching and hearing all the birds and butterflies waking up, just AMAZING cause the place is surrounded by nature. David is honest, real, non commercial and it is clear is loves his work and the place. His hospitality is out of the ordinary! It’s like a family member hosting you and taking care of all your needs… He knows a lot about Ecuador and gives great recommendations of Mindo and the rest of Ecuador.

Staying at Las Terrazas de Dana Lodge was wonderful! From the moment we were picked up at our Quito hotel by Marlon, we were in great hands. As he drove, Marlon told us about the various activities available near Mindo and then made the reservations we asked for: to see the Cock of the Rock on first morning, and to go on a more general birding walk the following day. Each morning, he made sure that we had thermoses of coffee for our very early hikes. The owner, David, was similarly helpful, thoughtful, and a delight to know. The rooms were very attractive, comfortable, and quiet. The highlight was the deck. We had unobstructed views of the mountains and the area directly in front of deck was filled with bird and butterfly attracting plants. Whenever the sun was out, the bushes were covered with humming birds and butterflies. Breakfast was served on our deck when we returned from birding. It was an outstanding breakfast in a remarkable setting. We ate one dinner in the restaurant and it was excellent. There were two somewhat negative aspects to Las Terrazas de Dana. The bathroom–except for the toilet–is open to the bedroom, so all noise, light, etc. from the sink and shower area becomes part of the sleeping area. Similarly, if you’re traveling with someone you don’t want to be naked in front of as you get into the shower, this hotel is not for you. The other possible negative is the location. You will always need a ride to get into town. The hotel will take you if its car is available, or will phone a taxi. For us, the quiet location was a plus, and the positives completely outweighed the negatives. We loved Terrazas de Dana and wouldn’t consider staying anywhere else in Mindo.

I have traveled quite a bit and this is one of the nicest overall hotel experiences I have ever had in my life. Here’s why: first and foremost, David and the rest of the staff are so, so nice and accommodating. It’s like staying with friends (friends with boundaries – do not fear, they are not overly intrusive, they are perfect). Customer service is absolutely their number one priority. Any time we needed anything, they went out of their way to make it happen and never made us feel like we were any trouble for asking. When we wanted to go zip lining, they drove us there and then picked us up; they also drove us into town a few times (a pleasant 20 minute walk but not one we wanted to make EVERY time) and over to see the butterfly farm (which I highly recommend). They just could not have been nicer. On top of that, the place is STUNNING with amazing views of the beautiful valley from the bungalows. It was so pleasant sitting on my deck watching hummingbirds and butterflies visit all the beautiful plantings outside (very few bugs). Everything is immaculately clean. I wish I’d had time for a bath in the big whirlpool tub with windows looking out over the valley — and I am a germ freak so would never have dreamed of using a hotel bath before (even at some of the 4 star luxury hotels I’ve been lucky enough to stay in), but this one was so clean I think you could have eaten out of it. The bed was super comfortable with high quality linens and firm and soft pillow choices (this last was not our consistent experience in Ecuador, even though we stayed in other very nice hotels; this is a thrifty country, which I think is awesome, but one place we stayed that was very high end still had weirdly ancient linens on their beds!). Breakfast was delicious and cooked to order with many options. Also, David’s English is really excellent, which was a nice break for me as my Spanish is horrible. Went with my husband and three teenage sons and all of us loved it here. An amazing value for what you get.
