Pool Las Terrazas de DanaWe want to share that this week at Las Terrazas de Dana Boutique Lodge & Spa, we’ve changed the way we care for our pool, focusing on the well-being and health of our guests and the environment by optimizing resources and ensuring crystal-clear water at all times. We’ve installed our new saltwater chlorinator, but wait a moment, how does a saltwater chlorinator work?

A saltwater chlorinator works by converting salt into chlorine to keep the pool water clean and free of bacteria. Here are the basic steps of the process:

Adding Salt: Salt is added to the pool, about 3000 ppm (parts per million), a concentration low enough that it doesn’t feel like the ocean.

Electrolysis: The pool is equipped with an electrolysis cell, a device containing metal plates. Saltwater passes through these plates, and when an electric current is applied, a chemical reaction occurs.
Chlorine Generation: During electrolysis, the salt (sodium chloride, NaCl) breaks down into chlorine (Cl) and sodium (Na). The generated chlorine disinfects the water, eliminating bacteria and algae.

Process Recirculation: Once the chlorine has done its job, it converts back into salt, and the cycle starts again.

This method is continuous and automatic, keeping the pool clean without needing to add chlorine manually. Additionally, the water is gentler on the skin and eyes, making swimming much more pleasant.

We brought this new, globally innovative method to Ecuador after many hours of work with local labor, successfully installing and adapting the mechanism to our pool, adding the necessary granulated salt, and controlling each level as indicated by the manufacturer. We’re thrilled with the results—the water is lighter, doesn’t irritate the eyes, and is gentle on the skin and hair. Eco-friendly, our pool now requires fewer chemicals, reducing our environmental footprint. Moreover, since the chlorination process is cyclical, it lasts much longer.

Pool Las Terrazas de DanaFor those with sensitive skin or allergies, saltwater pools can be a blessing. The mild salinity can soothe the skin, making it an ideal choice for guests with conditions like eczema or psoriasis.

Today we want to remember the event of the South American Bird Fair 2023, which took place in Mindo, Ecuador, became a reference point in the chronology of tourism related to birdwatching in our country. Las Terrazas de Dana Boutique Lodge & Spa and Margarit Boutique Hotel, our hotel in the town, were sponsors of the event and also David (founder of the hotel), was part of the organizing committee. In addition to birdwatching activities, the South American Bird Fair 2023 also included keynote lectures and daily talks at the covered sports center in Mindo, Ecuador. These presentations provided participants with a deeper insight into Ecuador’s biodiversity, as well as the high-quality tourist services and products that the country offers.

The South American Bird Fair 2023 was not only an opportunity for bird lovers to meet and share their passion, but it was also a platform to promote bird tourism in Ecuador and throughout the region. The event attracted travel agencies, tour operators, lodges and environmental foundations, generating opportunities to promote the Ecuadorian tourist offer in a total of 90 stands spread around the outside of the sports center in a permanent exhibition that lasted 3 days.

Here at Las Terrazas de Dana Boutique Lodge & Spa, we were fortunate to receive as our guests the ornithologist expert Paul Greenfield, co-author of “Birds of Ecuador” and “National Strategy for the Management and Sustainable Development of Bird Tourism”, and also the Ecuadorian biologist Juan Freile author of the book Birds of Ecuador, from Helm Field Guides, who signed our copies of their books for our guests to enjoy. We were also the lodging option for Laura Kammermeier from the Ornithology Laboratory of Cornell University. She is the marketing director of the virtual bird search engine “Birds of the World”.

The South American Bird Fair 2023 in Mindo, Ecuador was a great success. Ecuador records a new species of hummingbirds: Blue-throated Hillstar (Oreotrochilus cyanolaemus). It was discovered on the border between the provinces of El Oro and Loja.

The finding was published on September 26 in the scientific journal AUK, official media of the American Ornithological Society.

According to the research team, this new species is endemic to El Oro and Loja. It is closely related to a hummingbird called ‘Estrella de Cabeza Verde’, which lives in northern Peru and southern Ecuador. A new endemic species that adds to the 132 that already exist in Ecuador.

The deep blue of its throat distinguishes it from the other six species of stars described to date. This new species also has a green head. It is distinguished from other six by the particularity of its deep blue neck. It has other differences, such as the black line under the bib, the upper velvet triangle and its tail with white tips.
