Mindo Trip Budget: What a Cloud Forest Trip Costs (2026)

Mindo has a reputation as a cheap add-on to a Quito trip, and mostly it earns it. But the costs are lopsided: getting here is cheap, activities are mid-range, and lodging is where the budget either holds or falls apart. Here's what things actually cost, based on prices we verified on the ground.

Getting to Mindo

Transport Price Notes
Flor del Valle bus from La Ofelia $4.50 Check schedules at the terminal; they change often
Private taxi from Quito $80-90 Door to door, about 2 hours
Our private transfer $105 From or to Quito, booked with your stay

The bus is the budget pick and it's genuinely fine for the price. The taxi and transfer matter when you have luggage, a fixed schedule, or kids. Full comparison in how to get to Mindo from Quito.

Entry fees and activities

Activity Price (foreign visitors)
Tarabita + waterfall sanctuary $5 adults, $3 kids 5-11 and seniors
Mariposas de Mindo butterfly farm $8.50 adults, $4 kids 4-11
Zipline, full 10-cable tour $25
Zipline, 6-cable tour $20
Short zipline (2-3 cables) $10
Sky Bike $10
Tarzan Swing $10
Tubing $6 per person, minimum 4 people, plus about $2 taxi
Casa Amarilla reserve $7
Night walk: Hermit Night Walk $15 — where you see the glassfrog
Chocolate tour at Yumbos Chocolate (the one we use) $10
Chocolate tour at Mindo Chocolate Makers (formerly El Quetzal) Around $10, check current

A full activity day — zipline, waterfalls, butterflies — lands around $60-80 per person before food. Two days of that plus a guided birding morning is where a realistic activity budget starts: figure $120-160 per person for a two-day stay if you're doing everything.

Guides

A certified birding guide is the single biggest quality multiplier in Mindo, and also the biggest line item. Our own rate is A private half-day Mindo birding tour costs $100 total for up to two guests ($120 for three, $135 for four), with guide, scope, binoculars, transport and a pre-breakfast delivered the night before — about three and a half hours, starting at 6 AM. The half-day Chocó tour goes deeper into the hotspot for $240 total for two ($290 for three, $360 for four): 5:20 AM start, five hours, two birding-and-photography points and a full breakfast box included. If you split a guide between a small group, the per-person cost drops fast — four people sharing a full day pay under $40 each for the kind of morning that turns a list of 20 species into 80. Read birdwatching in Mindo if you're deciding whether it's worth it.

Food

Mindo town is full of cheap, decent restaurants. A set lunch runs a few dollars, dinner with a drink maybe $10-15. Chocolate and brownies at Mindo Chocolate Makers cost extra willpower, not much money. This is the category where skimping costs you little and overspending is hard.

Lodging: the real fork in the budget

The DIY math vs a package

The honest comparison for a short stay isn't hostel-plus-bus. It's: mid-range room + private transfer ($80-90) + entry fees + tours + guide + meals. Add that up over three days and you're often at or above our all-inclusive program prices — $530 for 2 days, $820 for 3, $1,130 for 4, per person with lower group rates. If you have a week, flexible dates, and enjoy logistics, DIY Mindo on a budget works well. If you have three days and want them to run smoothly, run both sums first.

Sample budgets per person (2 days / 1 night)

Style Rough total
Shoestring Bus + hostel + waterfall route + street food — the bus fare is the anchor, everything else adds up slowly
Comfortable Taxi or transfer + mid-range room + zipline, waterfalls, butterflies + restaurant meals
Full experience Transfer + forest lodge + guided birding mornings + chocolate tour + spa afternoon

We haven't put dollar figures on those rows because lodging ranges shift and hostel prices change faster than we can verify them. Check current rates for your dates; the activity column above is the stable part.

Where not to cut

Rain gear, good shoes, and a guide for at least one morning. Everything else in Mindo forgives a budget; the mud doesn't. See what to pack for the cloud forest.
