How many days you need in Mindo depends on one question: how many altitude bands do you want to cover? Each band — roughly 1,100 m at the valley, 1,800 m at the mid reserves, 2,500 m up the slope — is a different bird community, and the itineraries below are built around spending mornings in place rather than zigzagging. Here is how the days scale, with realistic counts.
Costs you will plan around
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Guide, half day | $90 |
| Guide, full day | $150 |
| Paz de las Aves morning | price on request — check current |
| Reserve entries | vary — check current, bring cash |
3 days — the valley and its icons
Day 1: Cock-of-the-rock lek at dawn (~6 AM), breakfast, hummingbird garden by mid-morning. Afternoon: Ruta de las Cascadas or the tarabita and falls. Night: the Hermit Night Walk ($15) — glassfrogs on private forest trails. Day 2: Guided morning at the mid reserves — feeders, mixed flocks, and a serious shot at the plate-billed mountain toucan. Afternoon free (photography, chocolate, rest). Day 3: Paz de las Aves antpitta morning (tour leaves 5:30–6:30 AM, ~6 hours with breakfast included), afternoon at lower feeders or town.
Realistic count: 120–160 species if you work it. This is the shortest trip we can recommend with a straight face.
5 days — three altitudes, properly
Days 1–3 as above, then:
Day 4: The upper slope. Guided morning toward 2,500 m for mountain tanagers, mountain-gems and the high forest. Afternoon: orchid garden or rest. Day 5: Choice day — Mashpi-Amagusa (1.5–2 h drive, ~320 acres of ridge forest, the Chocó endemics) for the ambitious, or a relaxed valley day of target-mopping for everyone else.
Realistic count: 180–230 species.
7 days — the full Chocó week
Days 1–5 as above, then:
Day 6: Outliers by altitude: Milpe reserve (1,050–1,150 m, manakin leks) in the morning, a second session at whichever band under-delivered earlier in the week. Day 7: Buffer and repeat visits. Every serious birder has one species that refuses; day 7 is for it. Non-birding partners get the day off — tubing, chocolate, spa.
Realistic count: 230–300 species, depending on luck and weather.
Principles that make these work
- One guide morning per two days. $150 buys the fruiting-tree knowledge that makes the self-guided days ten times more productive. Full-guide weeks are for listers on a mission; most people are happier with the mix.
- Dawn is non-negotiable but then stop. Bird hard from first light to mid-morning, then eat, then do a slow afternoon. The valley punishes 14-hour birding days with three days of exhaustion.
- Book the fixed appointments first. The lek, Paz de las Aves, and any reserve with limited access anchor the schedule; everything else flexes around them.
- Leave one afternoon unprogrammed. Weather will eat one afternoon of your trip; plan for it rather than being surprised by it.
- Altitude order matters less than you'd think. Cover all three bands, in whatever order, and do not double back within a day.
Combine with the rest of Ecuador
Mindo slots neatly before or after a Galápagos cruise and pairs with Quito in a classic two-stop trip. If you are building a longer Ecuador birding route, see how the Mindo and Galápagos combination works in practice.
